If you watch where development money goes, this one's big. The U.S. Treasury approved all 91 census tracts Colorado nominated as new , Gov. Jared Polis announced Monday. The Longmont Leader, citing BizWest's Nov. 2 report, says the list includes Boulder Valley and Northern Colorado communities.

The new Opportunity Zones go live Jan. 1, 2027

  1. 2017The original Opportunity Zone program launches.
  2. Sept. 2026Colorado submits its 91 tracts to the federal government.
  3. Nov. 2The U.S. Treasury approves all 91 tracts.
  4. Jan. 2027The new zones go live for investment.
  5. 2036The zones remain designated through 2036.

In these zones, investors can defer, reduce or eliminate capital gains taxes by putting money into projects. Designation doesn't automatically bring government funding for housing or businesses, and the $4 billion figure is a state projection, not committed money.

“This complete approval is a major milestone for economic growth in Colorado.”
